Oh, D'oh Is Me!

Is Sacha Baron Cohen's successful defence in the US courts against a libel claim brought by a woman whose name was taken in vain by Ali G really anything to breathe a sigh of relief about? It's tempting to applaud any semblance of rationality in the legal system across the pond, but note one thing: the defence only worked because the Ali G creation was successfully argued to be clearly satirical - even to the septics - not because the idea of someone, for some reason behind a loony tune sobriquet (Jane Doe, I ask you. We have the power of Google, you know), being able to sue for generic abuse of her name was deemed in any way mental.
And that's why I'm not going to believe that a precedent's been set. So ta ta for now, I'm off to Heathrow via the deed poll people. America, prepare to meet A.N. Other, otherwise known as Joe Schmo. It'll be fun!
